A call for initial submissions was announced at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® (AAIC®) 2024 in Philadelphia and online. The first issue will debut in fall 2024.
The new journal will provide a forum for contributions that:
- Examine and prioritize the connections between behavioral, economic, social and other determinants of health; aging; and Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
- Aid in the design, development, and implementation of evidence-based guidelines, best practices, strategies, interventions, therapeutics and public policy to ultimately reduce and eliminate disparities, and facilitate and create equity, in aging and dementia.
Key topics of the journal will include:
- Health economics.
- Formal and informal caregiving.
- Healthcare practices and consequences.
- Public health.
- Bioethics and legal decision making in treatment, drug development, and regulatory practices.
- Conduct of research, including diverse and inclusive participation.
- Mental health in aging.
- Behavioral economics.
The journal’s editor-in-chief is Crystal M. Glover, Ph.D. Glover is an applied social psychologist and mixed methodologist at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (and) Neurological Sciences in Rush Medical College. She leads the Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
“In today’s complex and evolving environment, the impact of behavioral, social and economic influences — separately and in combination — must be taken into consideration when creating and implementing policies that affect health and disease in aging,” Glover said.
“We plan to showcase exciting new research findings, and thoughtful and informed perspectives, on complex, nuanced and often sensitive topics in aging and dementia. The goal: to impact and inform behavioral strategies and interventions, guidelines, health policy, economic models, and legal practices that promote optimal, equitable aging and dementia care,” Glover added.
Glover’s areas of interest include health equity and health disparities; structural and psychosocial determinants of health; intersectionality as a conceptual framework and methodology; and social cognitive processes such as attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions. She focuses her research on understanding and facilitating cognitive and healthy aging across all demographic groups, with a special concentration on African American/Black and Hispanic/Latino communities and others traditionally under-included in aging and dementia research.
Glover belongs to several professional groups, including the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention BOLD Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Risk Reduction.
The new journal’s deputy editor is Jennifer Hagerty Lingler, Ph.D., M.A., CRNP, FAAN, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Lingler leads the School of Nursing’s Hartford Center for Gerontological Nursing Research. She also leads the Outreach, Recruitment and Education Core at the University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer Disease Research Center.
